It’s hard to believe that podcasts have been around for almost a decade. It seems like it was just yesterday that Apple rolled out this crazy little device called an iPod that could hold five gigs of music. Now here we are with tens of thousands of free programs called podcasts that we can fill up our idevices with.
Apple has been on board with podcasts since almost the beginning. It was in an update to iTunes in 2005 where the company sliced out a section of their online store to the new medium. Fast forward seven years and now Apple has turned their gaze to the medium again with the release of the Podcasts App.
This free app from Apple is meant for those who love their podcasts be they audio or video. The app integrates into the podcasts section of iTunes which allows for easy subscribing. Once you subscribe you can then download shows into your iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch. The app will also let you faux stream an app if you can connect to the Internet.
There are a few features that the apps has that the iTunes player does not have, like the ability to skip forward 30 seconds in the show. The app also has a sleep timer that can be set from five minutes to when the episode ends.
One of the drawbacks to the early version of the app is the long loading times when you start the app. It can take around 20 seconds before it will respond to your gestures.
Apple’s Podcasts App is a step in the right direction for organizing and promoting podcasts, but there is a lot of room for improvement.
We give Podcasts 3 stars out of 5.
Podcasts is a free app and can be downloaded from the Apple App Store.
